HGMH making improvements to parking lots and gates

HGMH making improvements to parking lots and gates

Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) is kicking off the first phase of a project to create 40 new parking spaces and modernize the parking gate payment system. Work on the project will begin in late September and is expected to be finished by the end of October, weather permitting.

The parking improvement project will be undertaken in three phases:

  1. add parking spaces on the west side of the hospital
  2. improve the ambulance/emergency area
  3. improve the asphalt on the east side of the parking lot and simplify the gate system to feature only one entrance gate

The additional parking spaces will make it easier for patients and family members to find the parking they need when visiting the hospital.  Additionally, the new system will replace the current coin-only system with one that uses tickets.  Visitors will be able to pay for parking at a machine indoors using a credit card, debit card, or cash.  The new system will also include a short grace period for those who need to make quick drop-offs to the hospital.  All of this will improve the patient and visitor experience at HGMH.

During construction, patients seeing a physician on the west side of the hospital will have a longer walk to get to their appointment due to the lot closures. HGMH is making efforts to minimize the timeframe for this disruption but asks for patience during the process. Ultimately the new parking system will create more parking spots, streamline the entry and exit process, and the indoor payment machines are intended to reduce the amount of time outdoors especially during winter.

"Increasing the number of parking spaces, especially on the west side, plus creating the grace period, are positive changes for our visitors," says Linda Ramsay, HGMH’s Chief Financial Officer and Vice-president of Support Services. "We hope that patients bear with us during the upgrade process." Visitors can check the hospital’s website for any updates to the construction.
