Best Practice Spotlight Organization Program Launch

Best Practice Spotlight Organization Program Launch
BPSO

Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) is proud to announce its appointment as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) pre-designate through the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO).

The BPSO designation is an opportunity for HGMH to further accomplish its vision of being a Centre of Excellence in rural health care and improving the health status of everyone we serve now and for generations to come.

This pre-designation as a BPSO means that for three years 2021-24, HGMH will be dedicated to a robust work plan to reach designation and provide quality, evidence-based care related to:

  • decreasing patient falls
  • minimizing the use of restraints
  • improving care of those experiencing delirium, dementia and depression
  • improving person and family centred care
  • improving care transitions

About the Best Practice Spotlight Organization Program

Best Practice Spotlight Organizations are healthcare and academic organizations selected by the RNAO to implement and evaluate RNAO’s best practice guidelines. It’s a partnership that focuses on making positive impacts on patient care through evidence-based practices.

“Implementing best practice guidelines will involve all of our staff here at HGMH. These guidelines will be applicable across all departments and provide even more high-level of care for our patients and families we serve,” explains Wendy MacLeod, Manager of Professional Practice at HGMH. MacLeod notes that during the three-year process, there will be a steering committee and several sub-committees involved in the rollout of evidence-based practices, data collection and evaluation.  Best Practice Champions (staff who complete a best practice guideline certification course) will bring subject matter expertise and support to management, coworkers and patients throughout the process.

Improving Patient Care

“Our Mission, Vision and Values are very clear and we aim for “Excellence Every Day” in all that we do at HGMH.  Being accepted into this international program (originating in Ontario) is an honour and we are very excited as a small, rural hospital to be part of this journey,” explains Kim Woods, Chief Nursing Executive and VP of Clinical Services at HGMH.

“We are fortunate to have the support of HGMH’s Senior Management Team, the Board of Directors and the hospital staff as a whole.  HGMH has received very positive feedback on this initiative from our Patient and Family Advisory Committee. Engagement is key and I can’t thank our staff and physicians enough for supporting this quality care initiative despite an ongoing pandemic and a global healthcare crisis.  This commitment is a testament to our staff dedication in continuously improving the patient experience and making patient safety a priority,” MacLeod adds.

MacLeod is the BPSO lead, and HGMH will be posting updates over the coming years on our website at www.hgmh.on.ca, the hospital Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook social media accounts as well as community newspapers.  To find out more about RNAO and the BPSO designation, visit rnao.ca/bpg/bpso.
